Hlíð Mývatn Accommodation is your base camp for exploring Iceland off the beaten track. Though we are placed right in the middle of nowhere – og maybe especially for that reason – here’s a few tips and practical information. We want you to arrive safely and with no hassle.
We are located on the north shore of Lake Mývatn, just off route 1, in a nature reserve in Northeast Iceland approx. 50 km south of Húsavík and 85 km east of Akureyri.
You don’t get closer to Icelandic nature than this.
Hlíð Mývatn Accommodation and neighbouring Eldá Guesthouse is your base camp for exploring Iceland off the beaten track.
Here, we invite you to settle in at just the level of comfort that suits you and plan next day’s adventure. All the while you enjoy our unmatched views of the 300-year-old lava field in the beautiful Lake Mývatn nature reserve. Imagine being dumped right into the wild. But in a comfortable setting where you get a good night’s sleep.
This is what it’s like at Hlíð Mývatn Accommodation. So, set your muddy hiking boots aside and allow yourself to kick back and relax after a long day of exploring. Our accommodation options range from the no-nonsense campsite, where we invite you to pick your own spot, set up your tent, and settle into the most beautiful view of Lake Mývatn. Or step up your accommodation game and spend the night in our Aska cottage fully equipped with a double bed, kitchenette, bathroom, and a stunning view of the 300-year-old lava field to go with your morning coffee.
If you prefer a nice and warm bed, but don’t need your own private cabin, one of our cottages, mini cottages, apartments, guesthouse or our hostel, is just the right choice for you. All our accommodation offers have exceptional views as we are in the middle of a nature reserve and far away from everyday hustle. But we do have wifi, don’t worry.
Finally, Icelandic village life is also an option. Our Eldá guesthouse in Reykjahlíð is close to both local services and amenities and your Mývatn adventure.
Important
information!
The lake of midges
The name Mývatn comes from the huge numbers of midges – small mosquito-looking flies – to be found here in the summer. Twice a year there are big clouds of midges. It is spectacular, but don´t worry, they are harmless. And – just to avoid unnccessary worries – they are most of the time not a big issue at the camp site. If though, the midges should bother you we recommend to use a head net and some repellent (can be bought at the reception).
Tapwater
Icelandic tapwater is totally safe to drink!
The cold water comes directly from the underground springs. It is pure and perfectly suited for drinking. The hot water is geothermal water that comes from deep boreholes and has a slight natural smell of sulphur. It is excellent for bathing and washing. We recommend that you remove any jewellery before washing as it can tarnis and become dark.
Rent a bike
You can rent bikes for either one day or ½ a day. Maps with hiking and bike routes are available from our reception. A wonderfully scenic 37 km long country road runs around the lake, ideal for biking.
