Hellishólar was built in 1952 and was a traditional farm on the planet until the year 2000. In 2000, the farmer who had lived and worked on the farm since 1990 decided to abandon the traditional farming operations and operate the tourism industry. It was decided to make the earth a tourist accommodation with a variety of facilities and services, and all the livestock and production rights of the earth were sold. In the first half of 2001, the construction of tourism facilities began.
At the end of 2004 Víðir Jóhannsson bought the farm.
Since 2004, Víðir has made a great development on Hellishólar wish is one of the largest tourist attractions in Iceland.
