Laxárbakki is a small tourism company offering accommodations and catering services throughout the year. Laxárbakki is located in Hvalfjordur, next to the salmon river Laxá. It is conveniently located on highway one, just 12 km from Akranes and 17 km from Borganes. It is a short distance from the main tourism areas in the Southwest, where Húsafell, Langjökull Glacier, Þingvellir, Hvalfjordur and Snæfellsnes are located. The unique birdlife in the área make Laxarbakki a convenient base for bird watching activities.
In addition to bird watching there are also great hiking trails close by, such as Akrafjall, Hafnarfjall, Skarðsheiði, Skessuhorn, Heiðarhorn, Síldarmannagötur as well as numerous other enjoyable and interesting areas to explore.
Laxárbakki offers accommodations for up to 36 persons in gorgeous luxury apartments. Sleeping bag accommodations for up to 18 persons are also available. There are 12 studio apartments available, 33-47 sqm in size. Seven of the units face northwest, overlooking the salmon river Laxá, and five units face south. The apartments are all new and very modern with all the latest amenities. Each apartment has a double bed and a sofa bed and accommodates up to 4 persons.
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything needed for cooking, including a stove, oven, microwave, and refrigerator as well as utensils and tableware. The kitchen and living room are adjacent and a full size bathroom with shower is located in each apartment. Three of the apartments have a washing machine inside the unit and the others have access to a shared laundry room. All the apartments come with free Wi-Fi, and access to a hot tub and sauna.
The guesthouse has six rooms; two single rooms with a single bed, two double rooms with bunk beds and two rooms with bunk beds for up to four persons. All the beds in the guesthouse come with complete bedding sets. The house has a shared kitchen with a washing machine and kitchen appliances, living room and two shared bathrooms with showers. The guesthouse comes with free Wi-Fi and access to a hot tub and sauna.
Laxárbakki operates a very good restaurant year-round that can seat 100. The menu focuses on homemade dishes, and is well known for catering parties and various events such as Midwinter Feasts and Sheep-Roundup Celebrations.
There is also a handicrafts corner featuring numerous items created by Icelanders, as well as foodstuff such as jam, dried fish, sun dried salted fish, etc. In addition, Country Market Days are held several times a year.Visit us and enjoy good food in a beautiful and relaxed atmosphere that is not too far from Reykjavik, but far enough to leave behind the hustle and bustle of fast-paced city life.
Interesting Attractions :
Hvalfjordur fjord is 30km long and 84m deep at its deepest area. During World War II from 1940-1945, an allied naval base was located in the bay.
The waterfall Glymur is at the end of Botnsdalur. It is the tallest waterfall in Iceland with a height of 198m.
At Þingvellir – literally “Parliament Plains” – the Alþing general assembly was established around 930 and continued to convene there until 1798. Major events in the history of Iceland have taken place at Þingvellir and therefore the place is held in high esteem by all Icelanders. Today Þingvellir is a protected national Park.
Gullfoss and Geysir:
The waterfall Gullfoss in the river Hvítá is considered one of the most magnificent waterfalls in the world.
Geysir in Haukadalur is considered the most powerful geyser in the world. Geysir has been inactive since 1900. During its active phase its eruptions reached the height of 80m.
The distance from Reykjavik to Gullfoss is 125km.
Krosslaug is situated in Lundarreykjadalur. The pool is about 42 ° C warm and is protected.
Húsafell is one of the most popular destinations for travelers in Iceland. It is surrounded by a broad and luxuriant forest extending up the slopes of the mountain and is surrounded by unique ravines, lava fields and glaciers. The weather is mild in the area making Húsafell an ideal place for hiking and all sorts of outdoor activities all year round.
Hraunfossar are waterfalls, situated in Borgafjordur between Reykholt and Húsafell and are one of the pearls of Icelandic nature. Countless waterfalls gush out of lava underground and fall into the river Hvítá.
Deildartunguhver is the most voluminous geyser in Europe, giving off 200L/sek of 100 ° C hot water. Deildartunguhver is 35km from Borganesi.
Gerðuberg is magnificent basalt. Underneath the rock is an old sheepfold, an ideal place where to eat lunch and enjoy the view. Gerðuberg is 46km from Borganes on the way to Snæfellsnes.
Garðalundur or the garden as locals call the grove, is just above the Folk Museum and the golf course in Akranes.
Below the pool and other sports facilities in Akranes, is one of the best beaches in Iceland, called Langisandur.

In this region one can enjoy the variety and beauty of the Icelandic countryside. Magnificent views of mountains and glaciers, verdant districts, varied bird life, flourishing rivers and lakes, fjords, bays and bubbling geothermals provide travelers with lots of options for exploring and enjoying this beautiful area.
Laxárbakki is located on the river delta of Laxá and Grunnafjordur (Leirárvogur). Grunnafjordur is 14.7 km and is characterized by large sandworm clays and varied birdlife. In the spring and fall, numerous birds pass through Grunnafjordur on their way to and from breeding grounds in Greenland and Canada. These include: margæs (Branta bernicia), red knot (Calidris canutus), Sanderling (Calidris alba) and Tildra (Arenaria interpres). Many waders such as: Sendlingur, Lóuþræll, Sandlóa and Tjaldur rely on the habitat in the area and the salmon across the delta on their way up to the river Laxá in Leirársveit. Grunnafjordur was designated a nature reserve in 1994 and approved as a Rams Region in 1996, the only Rams zone that is adjacent to the sea.

Síldarmannagöngur: from the bottom of Hvalfjordur over to Skorradaur.
Leggjabrjótur: between Thingvellir and Botnsdalur in Hvalfjordur.
Akrafjall is the Chairman Mountain seen from Akranes. It offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, including Háahnúk peak (555m), which is the southern peak and Geirmund peak (643m). A guestbook is on Háahnúkur.
Hafnarfjall against Borganes was formed during an ancient volcanic eruption which lasted for 4 million years. Hafnarfjall is 844m.
Baula is a prominent mountain visible from many parts of Borgarfjördur. It is a conical, 934m high rhyolite mountain.
Skessuhorn in Skarðsheiði is one of the characteristic mountains in the West. Skessuhornið is a very graceful mountain with steep cliffs and has a beautiful view overlooking Borgarfjordur. It is 963m high.
Golf enthusiasts can choose from 10 golf courses in the West. There are two 18 hole golf courses nearby, Garðavöllur in Akranes and Hamarsvöllur in Borganes. In addition three other golf courses located near Laxárbakki include Thorisstadir, Húsafell and Staðarsveit.
After a full day of activities, relaxing at one of the local swimming pools nearby is a great way to conclude your day. These include:Hreppslaug in Skorradalur , Heiðarskóli in Leirársveit , Hlaðir in Hvalfjordur, and the swimming pools in Akranes and Borganes.
